Doula
in Maine (ME) & New Hampshire (NH): Birth Support,
Postpartum Overnights & Last Minute Care
As an Maternity Nurse of 12 years I would occasionally
have parents ask me as they were walking out the
door "Can't you just come home with us?"
Although we would make light of it and chuckle, I
knew they were half serious. Then I thought to
myself - parents get a few follow up phone calls and
a scheduled home visit or two, but where is the
support during a particularly hard day or at night when
they are feeling
worried, frustrated, overwhelmed and/or exhausted?
While some
families are fortunate enough to have relatives who
can assist them - it is often during the day doing chores such as laundry,
cooking and watching over other children.
While this is also extremely valuable, I can't help
but think - what about when they leave for the
night? What about if the baby won't feed or the baby
is extremely fussy and mom and dad are exhausted? What if there are
suddenly breastfeeding difficulties brought on by
engorgement and/or sore nipples? And of course - what about
getting
necessary sleep to function during the day?
There are lots of wonderful resources to help
mothers during the day, but it seems services are
lacking at night or when one desperately needs them
NOW. I offer families
individualized support when they need it - last
minute (anytime) and/or overnight.
